I love being mestiza (half white, half filipina). I really do. Being the result of two completely different ethnicities has really affected my life, but in a good way. I love how I've been exposed to two different cultures all my life and it's affected how I view the world, how I live my life, etc. I can see HUGE differences between the people, between my two families, and it's crazy just how different they are. When I was younger, I definitely has more Filipino pride. Now, I am proud that I am both- which in reality is its own ethnicty in itself. I am a minority. And I love it. I love it when people ask me what I am and I tell them to guess and getting all kinds of guesses. Makes me think "Wow, do my features really perplex people that much?" I love it. I love how I can say I'm Mexican, and people will belive me. I love how I can say I'm Hawaiian, and people will believe me. lol. I have fun with it.

I'm grateful that my mom still takes pride in her Filipino culture. I know many Filipinos who come here to the USA and just want nothing to do with it. They become so Americanized, and it makes me sad. This in turn affects their children who have no identity with the blood that runs through their body. I know many full Filipinos, some being my friends, and I'm more Filipino than they are!

I love how my friends make racial jokes when I'm around because it makes me see who they identify me with. Not that racial jokes are a good thing, but I think it shows some sort of solidarity between my friends and I. For instance, when I'm with my Filipino friends, I'm the "white girl." When I'm with my "white friends" (which are like 3 or 4, lol), I'm the "asian." When I'm with a mixed group of my Mexican, Asian, etc. friends, I'm both, depending the situation, lol.

Anyways, I have a lot of mestiza pride. And I love it. And I love it when I hear people say "Oh, half Filipino? That's an interesting mix..." and things like that. Because to me, I feel like it's not THAT interesting. But it reminds me that yes, yes it is.
